Her diverse career spans public health, where she tackled the challenges of implementing evidence within health systems, to an economic think tank, where she researched public policies aimed at overcoming child and family poverty.

These experiences fuelled her curiosity about overcoming cultural and social barriers to fair and just public policies.

In 2018, Jess co-founded The Workshop, co-leading it for eight years. There, she pioneered unique and robust research methods for narrative and framing in Aotearoa New Zealand, advising public, private, and non-profit sectors on communicating health, environmental, and social issues for greater impact. Her insights have been featured in various media outlets, including the British Medical Journal, where she recently wrote on communicating climate.

Now, through Berentson Shaw Advisory, Jess brings her wealth of experience to provide expert research and advice on communicating complex issues, ultimately fostering more informed decision-making.
